Halo Dock

As a former violinist and current opera singer, music has always been a huge part of my life--it is a constant source of inspiration for my work. In this project, I aimed to enhance the music experience by creating a 3-ringed iPhone dock that functions like a large ball bearing. The Halo Dock is an iPhone dock specifically designed to enhance the musical experience through its physical aesthetics, appearing to the eye as a seamless aluminum ring that holds an iPhone in its center. The design process involved research, sketching, 3-D modeling with Solidworks, before manufacturing the pieces.

The piece allows the user to rotate the iPhone and place the phone in multiple views (both landscape and portrait), which is unique in comparison to other docks. As Plato once said, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination".  Inspired by this idea, the Halo Dock is intended to enhance the musical experience for individuals who seek something more that the standard iPhone dock. The rings were each bored out on the mill with a rotary table, band-sawed, and chamfered and finished with specific geometries on the lathe while the iPhone holder was machined on the mill.
